Estimator

Nicol of Skene, a well-established civil engineering, multi-utility and directional drilling construction company is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Estimator to join our team based in our INVERNESS Office.

You will be responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates and tender submissions for civil engineering projects. The Estimator will review tender documentation, assess project requirements, obtain supplier and subcontractor quotations, and assist in securing profitable work for the business.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare detailed cost estimates for civil engineering projects including labour, materials, plant, and subcontract works.
  • Review tender drawings, specifications, and other contract documents.
  • Carry out quantity take-offs and measurements.
  • Obtain and evaluate quotations from suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Prepare tender enquiries and analyse returned prices.
  • Assess project risks and opportunities during the tender stage.
  • Assist in preparing programmes, methodologies, and preliminaries for submissions.
  • Liaise with Contracts Managers, Engineers, Quantity Surveyors, and operational staff during the tender process.
  • Attend pre-tender and post-tender meetings where required.
  • Maintain accurate estimating records and tender documentation.
  • Assist with handover meetings following successful tenders.
  • Monitor market rates and industry trends.
  • Ensure all estimates comply with company procedures and client requirements.
  • Support continuous improvement within the estimating department.
  • Take responsibility for those aspects of OH&S management system over which they have control and assist the QHSE Systems Manager in improving OH&S performance and promoting compliance throughout the Company.
  • Any other related duties/tasks assigned.

Qualifications & Certifications

Essential

  • Previous estimating experience within the civil engineering or construction industry.
  • Good understanding of civil engineering methods and construction processes.
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications.
  • Strong numerical and analytical skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
  • Good communication and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work to deadlines and manage multiple tenders.
  • Full UK driving licence.

Desirable

  • HNC/HND or Degree in Civil Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, or similar.
  • Experience using estimating software.
  • Knowledge of NEC and JCT forms of contract.
