At Nicol of Skene, we specialise in trench-less technology, offering efficient and precise horizontal directional drilling solutions across the UK and Ireland.
As a leading HDD contractor in Scotland, and the only company in the North East with an HDD fleet, we ensure minimal disruption to the environment and existing infrastructures.
Horizontal Directional Drilling is a no-dig technique used to install pipes and ducts underground with minimal surface disruption. From river, rail, and road crossings to major utility connections, our team supports projects across mainland Scotland and the Highlands and Islands.
We’re the only HDD provider in the North East with a fully owned fleet—meaning faster mobilisation, better cost control, and expert delivery from start to finish.
Since introducing Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) in 2005, Nicol of Skene has grown into one of Scotland’s most experienced trenchless technology contractors.
With nearly two decades of proven results, we’re trusted across the utilities, infrastructure, and renewables sectors for our precision, professionalism, and problem-solving approach.
Our HDD team includes in-house designers, engineers, and project managers who plan and deliver complex crossings with efficiency and confidence.
From feasibility studies and stakeholder liaison to on-site drilling and reinstatement, our integrated delivery model means reduced delays, simplified coordination, and total peace of mind for clients.
Conducting detailed assessments and designing plans for rail, road, river, and utility crossings.
Utilising advanced surveying techniques to produce precise CAD layouts for project planning.
Executing both intrusive and non-intrusive surveys to gather essential geotechnical data.
Employing Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and trial hole surveys to accurately map existing utilities.
Providing in-depth analyses to inform project design and execution.
Coordinating with entities such as Network Rail, Transport Scotland, SEPA, National Gas, and local authorities to ensure compliance and smooth project progression.
Engineering installations for duct and pipe sizes ranging from 32mm to 800mm.
Developing tailored method statements to guide construction processes.
We operate one of the most capable HDD fleets in Scotland, including: Grundopit PS60, DitchWitch AT30, AT40 and two AT120’s, and PD80 Prime Drill, guaranteed cutting-edge solutions for directional drilling needs.
All rigs are operated by our in-house, highly trained team—ensuring quality and control at every stage.
The versatile GRUNDOPIT PS60 mini drill rig allows swift installation of utilities like gas, water, electricity, fibre cables, and sewer pressure pipes. Its compact size suits house connections and challenging terrains.
Versatile workhorse for challenging ground conditions, ensuring reliable results and minimal disruption. Ideal for utility installations and infrastructure projects.
Engineered for productivity and reliability, navigating diverse terrains with ease. Perfect for large-scale utility installations and complex projects.
The AT120 is one of the world's largest all-terrain drilling rig. It offers impressive power with 120,000 lbs of pullback/thrust and 15,500 ft·lbs of rotational torque. It combines environmental efficiency with exceptional drilling capabilities.
The PD80 Drilling Rig, particularly the PD 80/45 CU model, boasts 800 kN pull force and high flexibility with quick setup. An integrated X-1,000 mud pump ensures a robust flow rate with minimal wear.
Nicol of Skene is proud to have played a key role in the expansion of a renowned distillery as part of the Aberlour Distillery Abstraction Scheme. We delivered a significant horizontal directional drilling (HDD) project that will expand production capacity at the Speyside distillery.
Working closely with SSE Power & Distribution, our expert drilling team mapped out the best course of action, which included horizontal directional drilling under the River Don in Aberdeen. The project consisted of using the Prime Drill PD-80 drilling rig.
