Inspection Technician

Nicol of Skene, a well-established civil engineering, multi-utility and directional drilling construction company based in Aberdeen is seeking an experienced and highly motivated Lifting Equipment Inspector.

The successful candidate will ensure all lifting equipment, accessories, plant and machinery are thoroughly inspected, tested and certified in accordance with statutory regulations and company procedures, maintaining safety and compliance at all times.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Carry out thorough examinations and inspections of lifting equipment and accessories in line with LOLER (Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998).
  • Inspect items such as chains, shackles, manhole lifters, vacuum lifters, pipe lifters, barrel lifters, lifting clutches, web slings, round slings, excavator forks and ancillary lifting points on ISO containers, half height skips, fuel tanks / IBC's, portable welfare units, generators and pumps.
  • Carry out PAT Testing on all company equipment.
  • Support the workshop in any repairs and maintenance on various items.
  • Identify defects, wear, damage, or non-compliance and take appropriate action.
  • Complete detailed inspection reports and certification records accurately.
  • Tag and record equipment status (e.g. safe for use, quarantine, repair required).
  • Ensure inspection registers and documentation are maintained and up to date.
  • Liaise with site teams, supervisors, and management regarding equipment condition and compliance.
  • Support investigations into lifting-related incidents or near misses.
  • Ensure all work is carried out in line with company health & safety procedures.
  • Keep up to date with changes in legislation and industry best practice.

REQUIREMENTS

Key Skills & Experience Required:

  • Proven experience inspecting lifting equipment and accessories within construction, civils, or industrial environments
  • Strong knowledge of:
    • LOLER regulations.
    • PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998).
  • Ability to identify faults and assess equipment safety.
  • Good attention to detail and record-keeping skills.
  • Competent in completing inspection reports and using digital systems.
  • Safety-focused with a proactive attitude.
  • Reliable and methodical.
  • Strong integrity when making safety-critical decisions.
  • Strong organisational skills and able to work on own initiative.
  • Strong communication skills.

Qualifications & Certifications

Essential

  • Previous experience of Thorough Examination of Lifting Equipment / Accessories.
  • Recognised Plant Inspector qualification - NPORS N039A,B,C,D,E Plant Inspector or equivalent.
  • Recognised qualification for the Thorough Examination of Lifting Accessories (NPORS N019 Report of Thorough Examination of Small Lifting Equipment and Lifting Accessories or equivalent).
  • LEEA (Lifting Equipment Engineers Association) qualification.
  • Full UK Driving Licence.

Desirable

  • Relevant NVQ or equivalent in Plant Maintenance, Plant Fitter or Mechanic or similar.
  • Experience of Construction and Civil Engineering Plant and Equipment.
  • Relevant Inspector qualification for LOLER / PUWER.
  • CSCS Card.
