Nicol of Skene Celebrates Completion of Early Works on Major HVDC Project

Nicol of Skene is proud to announce the successful completion of the ‘Early Works’ phase on the Spittal to Peterhead HVDC project, delivered on behalf of our client, NKT, for SSEN Transmission.

Our team, supported by key supply chain partners, has maintained a high standard of safety and quality throughout this initial phase. To date, we have successfully delivered:

  • 15km of stock fencing
  • 4,600m of 6m wide Haul Road
  • 32,000m² of Hardstanding Areas
  • Import of over 75,000t of aggregate
  • 600m of Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) across 5 shots in both Peterhead and Caithness

Building on the progress of this initial phase, the project is now transitioning into the Main Works. While foundational work continues, this next stage will see several key operations getting underway, including:

  • Commencement of 15km of open cut ducting installation
  • Advancing the remaining 16km of Horizontal Directional Drilling
  • Finalising the remaining 11km of haul road

The progress achieved so far is a reflection of the hard work and commitment of everyone involved. Nicol of Skene would like to give credit to our key supply chain partners for the safe, high-quality work and outstanding progress achieved so far:

  • James Jamieson Construction Ltd
  • WLB Contracts Ltd
  • Emtelle
  • DAM Geotechnical Services
  • JS Tree Services Ltd
  • Hatton Traffic Management Ltd
  • Ditch Witch UK & Ireland
  • Leiths Scotland Ltd
  • Breedon Group PLC
  • Keyline Civils Specialist

We look forward to carrying this momentum into the next stage of the project.
