Nicol of Skene recently completed a small works project at the well-known Lovers Walk in Peterculter, providing a much-needed upgrade to the popular pedestrian route.
Completed in just over a week (October 20th–29th, 2025), the project focused on replacing the existing path surface with a new, smooth tar surface to ensure easier and safer access for all users.
The scope involved using recycled subbase from Nicol’s own recycling operations, grading the existing path, supplying 10mm dense tar (supplied by Leiths), and expertly laying the asphalt using specialist equipment.
The primary challenge for our team on this project was the path's exceptionally narrow width - just 1.3 metres. This restricted the use of standard paving machinery, as the path was only 0.2 metres wider than our smallest paving machine.
To execute the project with precision and efficiency, the team utilised highly manoeuvrable, specialist equipment: a micro digger, a 1-ton dumper, and a small tar machine. This approach allowed our team to deliver a high-quality finish within the confined space.
The project successfully concluded with the installation of a high-quality tar surface path. This upgrade not only enhances the user experience but also provides a durable, low-maintenance surface for people to enjoy for years to come. Key suppliers and partners on the project included Leiths, Jarvie, and McLeod.
